Lot 168: George J. V. Holme, Hand-Carved Wooden Heraldic Plaque, Mid-20th Century, Order of the Thistle Insignia

A mid-20th-century hand-carved wooden heraldic plaque of shield form, crafted by the specialist carver George J. V. Holme of Preston, Lancashire. The piece features a central relief carving of the insignia of the Order of the Thistle, depicting a thistle within a circular border inscribed with the motto NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT, superimposed over an eight-pointed rayed star. The field of the shield is finished with a finely textured stippled ground. The reverse is fitted with a metal hanging loop and bears an impressed mark for the maker G. J. V. HOLME alongside a printed paper label which reads: WOOD CARVING BY GEORGE J. V. HOLME, PRESTON, LANCS. TELEPHONE 38228.
