Lot 254: Shorter & Son Ltd. Staffordshire Dick Turpin Character Jug

A hand-painted glazed ceramic character jug produced by Shorter & Son Ltd. of Staffordshire, England. The vessel depicts the highwayman Dick Turpin, rendered with a black tricorn hat, a black eye patch, and a goatee. The handle is modelled in the form of a flintlock pistol. The base bears the incised name DICK TURPIN alongside a black printed mark stating GENUINE STAFFORDSHIRE HAND PAINTED SHORTER & SON LTD. ENGLAND. A small hand-painted decorator mark, appearing as the characters X and P or a stylised K, is also visible on the underside.
