Lot 223: Tony Wood Staffordshire Toby Teapot

A Tony Wood Staffordshire novelty teapot produced in the form of a seated Toby figure. The earthenware piece is moulded in relief and decorated with hand-painted polychrome glazes under a clear glossy overglaze. The character is depicted in traditional 18th-century attire, featuring a black frock coat, a maroon waistcoat over a yellow garment, and tan-coloured breeches. The figure is seated on a low bench, with the spout formed by a protrusion from the shoulder and a simple loop handle attached to the reverse. The removable lid is formed by the crown of the character’s black tricorn hat. The base features a printed manufacturer mark in black, consisting of a central heraldic crest with a shield and lion rampant, surrounded by the words Tony Wood in stylized script, with STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND in block capitals below. A small hand-painted W or M mark is also present near the edge of the base.
