Lot 199: Studio Anne Carlton Ltd, Sherlock Holmes Chess Set, Original Boxed Edition, circa 1995
A complete “The Original Sherlock Holmes” themed chess set manufactured by Studio Anne Carlton (SAC Limited) of England. This set features thirty-two highly detailed pieces crafted from a crushed stone and resin composite, designed to replicate the characters from the celebrated literary works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The “light” side is finished in a cream ivory-effect, featuring Sherlock Holmes as the King, Mrs Hudson as the Queen, and Dr Watson as the Bishop. The opposing “dark” side is finished in a deep brown wood-grain effect, featuring Professor Moriarty as the King, Irene Adler as the Queen, and Colonel Moran as the Bishop. Other characters represented include Inspector Lestrade as the Knight and the Hound of the Baskervilles. The set is housed in its original decorative “Chess for the Discerning Collector” cardboard box and includes two brown velvet-lined protective storage trays. It is accompanied by the original informational insert which provides a historical context for each character and their corresponding role on the board.
