Lot 18: Chinese Framed Painting of Three Celestial Figures in the Dunhuang Style. Collection Only
A framed painting executed in ink and pigments on silk, depicting three celestial female figures, likely Buddhist deities or apsaras. The figures are shown amidst a landscape of stylized, swirling clouds. The central and largest figure is portrayed with a circular green halo, dressed in elaborate layered robes of red, green, and ochre, adorned with intricate jewellery featuring blue and gold beadwork. The flanking figures are similarly attired, with one holding a ceremonial object. The painting style is reminiscent of traditional Chinese Buddhist mural art. The work is mounted within a patterned silk damask border and housed in a dark wood frame with a gilded inner edge, set under glass. In the lower-left corner of the painting is a large square red seal mark containing characters in archaic seal script. A smaller rectangular red seal mark is located in the upper-left area.
