Lot 448: A Collection of Seven Victorian Fish Chromoxylographs by A. F. Lydon

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

A collection of seven antique colour-printed wood engravings (chromoxylographs) depicting freshwater fish of the British Isles. These plates were produced as supplements for the late 19th-century periodical The Angler, circa 1890s. The illustrations are the work of British natural history artist Alexander Francis Lydon (1836–1917). Five plates bear the imprint of printer Benjamin Fawcett of Driffield, while two plates (Golden Tench and Sticklebacks) were printed by E. T. W. Dennis of Scarborough. The subjects included in this lot are Golden Tench, Chub, Pike, Sharp-Nosed Eel and Broad-Nosed Eel, Roach, Bull Trout, and Sticklebacks (identifying six varieties). Each plate features the printed text Presented with The Angler at the bottom left. Artist signatures or initials A. F. Lydon or A.F.L. are visible on several plates.
250mm x 185mm per sheet.
