Lot 611: A Pair of Antique Industrial Wooden Loom Shuttles from Nelson, Lancashire

A pair of antique industrial loom shuttles manufactured in Nelson, Lancashire. The bodies are crafted from a dense hardwood, such as boxwood or persimmon, and are reinforced with tapered steel-capped ends to facilitate high-speed passage through a loom. One shuttle is an automatic pirn-changing model featuring a metal-hinged internal pirn holder. The second shuttle is a hollow shell with a distinctive ribbed interior. The side of the pirn-changing shuttle bears a stamped maker mark reading W. [illegible] & SONS MAKERS, NELSON LANCS, which is likely attributed to W. Walton & Sons. A small paper label with the inventory number 72706 is also present. These shuttles were standard industrial equipment in British textile mills during the late 19th to mid-20th century.
