Lot 615: An Assortment of Naval and Military Commemorative Memorabilia and a Chinese Carved Wooden Box

A collection of twentieth-century commemorative and decorative items. The group includes a circular turned ashtray crafted from teak salvaged from HMS Ganges, an 84-gun second-rate ship of the line launched in 1821 and broken up in 1930. A curved brass plaque is pinned to the side, inscribed FROM THE TEAK OF H.M.S. GANGES THE LAST SAILING SHIP TO SERVE AS A SEAGOING FLAGSHIP. Included is a small brass presentation dish or pin tray, hand-engraved to the centre ERRA 31st July 1934, likely referring to the Engine Room Ratings Association. A bespoke militaria display features a wooden rifle butt section, resembling that of a Lee-Enfield service rifle, complete with a brass butt plate and an unengraved rectangular brass plaque. It is mounted on a stepped wooden plinth alongside a small cast-metal model of a sporting rifle and five inert rifle cartridges with struck primers. The collection also contains a large two-piece circular wooden box by the Weing Hing Chinaware Co. of Hong Kong. The lid is intricately carved in relief with a duck and lotus motif and retains traces of original pink pigment.
