This item is a white metal locket of lobed, cross-shaped form, produced in Birmingham during the Edwardian era. The front face is decorated with hand-engraved foliate and scroll motifs surrounding a central circular medallion. The reverse side is similarly engraved with floral and leaf patterns. The piece is hinged at the side, opening to reveal two circular internal compartments designed for portrait photographs. It is equipped with a small suspension loop at the top for attachment to a chain or fob. Pieces of this nature were common sweetheart jewellery items given or worn during the First World War period.
